JOB TITLE: SCHOOL NURSE, ELEMENTARY
REQUIREMENTS: Registered Nurse licensure in the State of Nebraska
REPORTS TO: Building Principal and Director of Student Programs
RECEIVES GUIDANCE FROM: Building Administrator and Director of Student Programs
JOB GOAL: The school nurse is a member of an interdisciplinary education team, whose goal is to strengthen the educational process by supporting the student’s health, both emotionally and physically, and assist the teacher in providing and reinforcing education and instruction to the student
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 193 days per year, 7.5 hours per day
EVALUATION: Evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of the district’s Personnel Evaluation Policy
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
- Consistent and punctual "on site" attendance at the worksite is an essential job function
- Coordinates overall health services being provided to students
- Supervises the daily responsibilities, and assists the building principal in evaluation of Health Technicians
- Conducts school health services, including health examinations and screenings as recommended per School Health Services in the Nebraska Guidelines
- Responsible for the selection and referral of students in need of medical and dental care
- Reports to parents, school personnel, physicians, and other community agencies on school medical matters
- Serves as the school's health representative on community activities/committees related to student health topics
- Advises on modivications of the individual educational program for students with medical needs and provides a nursing care plan as needed
- Assesses and evaluates students for signs and symptoms which are suggestive of illnesses, including communicable diseases, and makes referrals to appropriate medical personnel, including assistance for securing resources and needed medical treatment
- Recommends to the building principal any exclusions and re-admissions of students in connection with communicable diseases
- Prepares and submits any health reports required by local, state, or federal health agencies
- Develops and maintains student health records, i.e. immunizations, health history
- Monitors the confidentiality and accuracy of student health records
- Advises school staff on health matters, particularly in regard to specific health needs of students
- Participates in district inservice training programs
- Provides inservice to school staff regarding student health issues
- Assists classroom teachers in the instruction of CPR, First Aid, Attack on Asthma, Seizures, and other areas of the approved district health curriculum which are being provided in the general education classroom
- Responsible for assisting with the development of school policies and procedures as related to health and medical areas
- Identify health concerns for individual students and procedures required
- Provide first aid assistance and health advice within the scope of nursing
- Serve as a consultant and resource person to the students, teachers and administrators
- Provide professional supervision, direction and monitoring for the administration of medications and to assure the competency of the unlicensed staff that provide medications to students in accordance with the Medication Aid Act and within the scope of practice of the professional Registered Nurse
- Monitor compliance of school health program with federal, state and local laws, regulations and policies
- Promote appropriate skill development, communication and teamwork in a positive working relationship with the Health Technician in meeting the health and medical needs of the student
- Shall be responsible for other duties as assigned by the building principal, Director of Student Programs, Superintendent or Board of Education
